چکیده

by Joel I. Cehn R«Leports of clusters of cases of disease, allegedly resulting from exposure to ionizing radiation, frequently appear in the press. To the laymen, these reports are difficult to interpret and are often frightening. How do we evaluate such reports? A cluster of disease cases refers to what appears to be an unusual increase in the number of cases. Such clusters can occur either in space or time, or both. Clusters in time would occur, for example, during a winter flu epidemic. Clusters in space are represented by so-called "leukaemia houses" in which several families, successively occupying the same residence, have experienced leukaemia among one or more children. More commonly, clusters refer to groupings over space and time: disease rates in a small geographic area are increased for a period of time. Study of such clustering is important; clusters of cases in a population may provide important clues to agents later recognized as harmful. Much of our knowledge of dangerous exposures has resulted as a consequence of the observations of an astute physician, who has noted an unusual occurrence of disease. Some examples: • The relationship between deafness in children and the existence of measles during the mother's pregnancy was first recognized by an alert Australian ear specialist. He saw an unusual number of cases of deafness in children, which he traced back to a recent epidemic of measles. • The role of vinyl chloride in the genesis of a variety of liver cancer was first uncovered by an industrial physician. He observed several cases of this rare disease among employees of one manufacturer — a far higher incidence than could reasonably be expected.

The Status of Stress Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Using 99mTc Pharmaceuticals in Japan: Results from a Nationwide Survey

Objective(s): To appropriately use one-day myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) with 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals (i.e. to avoid shine-through artifacts), injection doses need to be optimized and dose ratios between the 1st and 2nd scans should be maintained at ≥ 3. However, the current state of practice in Japan is unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to clarify the details of MPI protocols us...

History and Perspectives of Nuclear Medicine in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the smaller states in Asia. But it has a long and rich history of nuclear medicine for over sixty years. The progress in science and technology is always challenging in a developing country. In 1958, work for the first Nuclear Medicine facility was commenced in Dhaka in a tin-shed known as ‘Radioisotope Centre’ and was officially inaugurated in 1962. Since the late 50s of t...

Epidemiological studies of leukaemia in children and young adults around nuclear facilities: a critical review.

The existence of an increased risk of childhood leukaemia near nuclear installations is a recurrent issue. A review of the related epidemiological literature is presented here. Results for 198 nuclear sites throughout 10 countries were included in the review. In addition to local studies, 25 multi-site studies have been published for eight countries. A large variability was noticed in the quali...

Childhood Cancer Clusters in New Mexico, 1973-1997

Childhood cancer has been a growing problem in the United States with approximately 8,000 new cases reported annually for children under the age of 15. The first step in epidemiological studies of childhood cancer is usually to identify places with elevated rates. Past research placed particular emphasis on childhood cancer in children living near nuclear facilities. This study tests whether st...

Investigation of metal hydrides applicability as neutron moderator and shielding by MCNPX

In this research, the applicability of several metal hydrides as neutron moderator and shielding for D-D fusion sources has been investigated by MCNPX code. The results have been investigated in three steps to find the materials with lower thermal, fast and total neutron fluxes than conventional shielding materials. The results show relative advantages of LaNi5H6, VH, TiH2, TaH, Mg (BH4)2, YH2,...
